Success in the South Bay: South Bay Bicycle Coalition

Last night, Monday March 29th, the South Bay Bicycle Coalition (SBBC) met at the Joslyn Center on 15th and Valley in Manhattan Beach to discuss Earth Day Activities, Bicycle Master Plan processes, the RENEW grant from LA County Department of Public Health (from federal stimulus funds), and the Beach Cities Health District Grant they received.
The biggest news is that SBBC and LACBC recently received a RENEW grant to create a regional South Bay Bicycle Master Plan, to create inter-jurisdictional bikeways and connect cities in the South Bay region of Los Angeles. In addition, SBBC was able to leverage the grant to receive a micro-enrichment grant from Beach Cities Health District to do outreach and buy materials for promotion.
The process for this grant is starting soon, and we’ll be hiring an Initiative Coordinator to be implementing this grant. More details to come.
In addition to the RENEW grant, SBBC is hosting an Earth Day bicycle parade April 17th at 10am, starting at Marine Avenue Park and ending at the Earth Day festivities at Polliwog Park in Manhattan Beach. LACBC will be providing bike valet for all riders who come to the event that day.
Lastly, David Pulsipher from Alta Planning and Design spoke about general bicycle planning processes, which was helpful for the group to learn how bicycle master plans work.
Great work from SBBC and we look forward to a continued partnership to create a more bicycle friendly LA County, of which the South Bay plays an important part.
