On Monday October 26 at 5 P.M. a meeting was held in Van Nuys to gather public input for the LA Bike Plan. Here is excerpted feedback from Colin Bogart, LACBC staff.
Right from the start, I’m not impressed by a 5:00 pm start time. I’m hosting 5 community meetings in Glendale and I’ve done my best to schedule them at 7:00 pm whenever possible to ensure people can attend (6:30 pm at the earliest).
The equestrians showed up en masse to oppose any consideration of mountain biking in city parks or other off-road locations that are city owned or managed. In fact, the equestrians were calling for the complete removal of Chapter 3 (the mountain bike chapter) from the bike plan. The equestrians spent most of their time writing anti-mountain bike sentiments on at least one of the poster boards put up for public comment. I think Los Angeles is probably unique in that it has off-road riding opportunities within city limits. Does anyone know of other bike plans that include an off-road/moutain biking section? What is the possibility of keeping the mountain bike chapter in the plan but also encouraging the city to adopt that chapter into the Recreation Element of the City’s General Plan?
